Introduction:
Mange is the common name given to parasitic skin conditions caused by mites, which cause intense itching and hair loss in the horse. Mites are most active during the hot, dry summer months and can be found on long grass where they are picked up on contact. When the mite attaches itself to the horse’s legs, it injects a fluid into the horse’s tissue which causes irritation and discomfort. Hypersensitive skin conditions can also be caused by biting insects like flies and midges. Regular use of fly repellant spray will help to prevent this from occurring.
Treatment:
Thoroughly scrub the area with a germicidal horse shampoo such as Vetguard. Repeat this process every 7 to 14 days to ensure that the area remains as clean as possible. Applying Equisoothe in the morning and Pharmasoothe in the evening will further help to reduce the irritation caused by mites and flies.
